Saint Joseph Calasanz, also known as Joseph Calasanctius, was a Spanish Catholic priest and educator. He was born on September 11, 1557, in Peralta de la Sal, Spain, and is celebrated as the founder of the Order of Poor Clerks Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools, also known as the Piarists.
Joseph Calasanz dedicated his life to the education and formation of children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. He believed that every child, regardless of their social status, deserved an education and sought to provide quality schooling for them.
In 1597, he opened the first free public school in Europe in Rome, Italy. This institution was open to children of all backgrounds and focused on providing both academic and moral education. Calasanz developed a unique pedagogy that integrated a holistic approach to education, emphasizing not only intellectual growth but also the formation of character and spiritual development.
Calasanz's educational work faced numerous challenges and opposition. However, his perseverance and commitment to the education of children kept his mission alive. In 1621, he founded the Piarist Order, a religious congregation specifically dedicated to educating young people. The order grew rapidly, spreading across Europe and even reaching the Americas.
Apart from his educational contributions, Saint Joseph Calasanz also worked to alleviate the suffering of the poor and sick. He devoted himself to charitable works, offering assistance to those in need and establishing programs to support the disadvantaged.
Saint Joseph Calasanz died on August 25, 1648. He was canonized by Pope Clement XIII in 1767 and is recognized as the patron saint of Catholic schools. His feast day is celebrated on August 25th.
